This is a panel made with 5 squares set on point into a banner shape and featuring 5 different embellishment techniques. The squares can be set in other ways and you can use your own colours - these amounts are for the sample as shown
I provide the patterns, but you may find it useful to have a notebook
Red square - 3 (or more) colours/prints in red. Cut one 6-1/2 inch square for the background, and four each of 4 inch and 3 inch squares for the points. Small red buttons or beads, at least 8.
Orange square - 5 x 7-inch squares and one 7-1/2 inch square in shades of orange, plus one six inch square in bright yellow and one 4 inch square in a darkish red or brown fabric.
Yellow square - one 6-1/2 inch background square in yellow. One 9 inch square and one 5 inch square for the centre of the sunflower, in a plainish yellow fabric (marbled fabrics or hand-dyes are nice) Scraps or 2 different fat eighths in other yellows for the petals. Small beads in yellows, oranges or browns
Green square - one 6-1/2 inch square in green for the background. Three pieces about 6 by 3 inches in different green prints for the leaves. Green yarn or heavy embroidery thread.
Blue square - one 12 inch square in a water-like blue. Yarn or heavy embroidery thread for couching - perhaps something shimmery?
Three 10 inch squares for setting triangles in any colour you like - I used purples
Batting and backing to suit - a piece just wider than a quarter metre of each
Yarn for tassell - you can use the remainder of the two you have used on the green and blue squares, or another...
Sewing machine:- Nothing fancy, all you need is straight and zigzag stitch and a standard foot. If you have a walking foot it is useful. Please make sure that you bring the manual, put in a fresh needle, and wind a bobbin before you come.
Please do not bring a '£20 special' toy plastic machine, as I do not allow them in my classes...
Thread:- 100% cotton thread in colours to go with your fabrics.
Sewing tools:- the usual pins, scissors, etc. Pencil or marking pen for transferring a pattern.
Rotary cutter, cutting mat and a square quilter's ruler.
